Certification Overview
An innovation of IFC, EDGE (“Excellence in Design for Greater Efficiencies”) is an online platform, a green building standard and a certification system for over 140 countries. The EDGE application helps to determine the most cost-effective options for designing green within a local climate context. EDGE can be used for buildings of all vintages, including new construction, existing buildings and major retrofits.
A project that reaches the EDGE standard of 20 percent less energy use, 20 percent less water use, and 20 percent less embodied energy in materials compared to a base case building can be independently certified. The value of EDGE certification is a promotional advantage, as customers benefit from lower utility bills.
EDGE is part of a holistic strategy to steer construction in rapidly urbanizing economies onto a more low-carbon path. It’s an example of IFC’s commitment to creating markets that are competitive, sustainable, inclusive and resilient
EDGE certification rewards developers who implement strategies to reduce energy and water use in their buildings, as well as embodied energy in materials. Offered at a modest cost, EDGE certification includes a preliminary certificate at the end of the design audit, and final certification after a construction audit. The preliminary EDGE certificate can be used to promote the project with the EDGE brand and develop a value proposition for customers who wish to own, rent or work in a green building. EDGE is available for new building designs as well as for existing buildings.

Take the EDGE training course with EDGE local or global certifiers and obtain an EDGE Exam ID number.

You should arrive at least 30 minutes before your scheduled exam appointment. This allows time for you to sign in and for staff to verify your identification.
You must present a valid form of identification before you can test. The identification document must:
- Be government-issued (e.g., driver’s license, state-issued identification card, military identification card or passport).
- Contain both a current photo (or a physical description) and your signature.
- Have a name that exactly matches the name used to register for the exam (including designations such as “Jr.” and “III”).
Important Failure to provide appropriate identification at the time of the exam is considered a missed appointment.

Personal Belongings
You will not be allowed to take any personal items with you into the testing room. This includes all bags, books or other materials not authorized for this exam, notes, phones, pagers, watches and wallets. You will, however, be provided a locker where you can keep your personal items. It is important that all electronic items, such as cellphones should be turned OFF.
